Musicals | Pad Patter 1/17

I love musicals, I have been to watch a few in the theatre with my husband. I have seen Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, Wicked, Guys & Dolls, Shrek the Musical and loads more I can't remember lol.

One of my all time favourites though is Grease

 

oh YES! I often listen to random Broadway shows while scrapping! My current favorites are Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked, Phantom, Les Miserable, Aida and of course Hamilton. I grew up listening to musicals with my Mom... like all the good Rodgers and Hammerstein ones... Oklahoma, South Pacific, The King and I, Flower Drum Song, etc.

 

I was a bit oblivious to musicals, and theater in general, growing up. My parents were homebodies. But around 2010 I signed up my oldest for homeschool drama club. My second child joined in the following year. They almost always did musicals, and my kids often got big roles, they're so dramatic and love the stage. So that decade was an immersion in musicals for me: Annie, Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, . . . And then at the end of the decade I worked in a stage theater box office and got to see a few professional musicals.

I've enjoyed them all. I don't really have a favorite, but my fondest memories involve Annie. My kids actually performed it with two different theater groups, and created their own spin-off skits, and were generally obsessed with it for a few years. I also love the way my oldest brought audience members to tears singing Feed The Birds in Mary Poppins and how proud my second is of their performance in Wizard of Oz.

Yeah, my love of musicals is more a love of my children. I mean, musicals are awesome in their own right, but what I love most about them is what they gave my kids.

 

I enjoy musicals. The last one I saw was the second Momma Mia movie.

 

I did see a lot of musical movies growing up since they were very popular at the time. Didn't really have a favorite but I do remember Hello Dolly and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. As an adult I did enjoy Grease because I related to the stars. And, who can forget Saturday Night Fever... I lived that life at the time! (John Travolta is only 1 year older than me).

Living in a small town the only musical performances I would see were put on by the high school choir in the spring. Fiddler on the Roof my junior year and Hello Dolly my senior year. Don't remember the others.

I have seen one Broadway musical in my life. Joey Fatone in Rent. My friend chose our one Broadway show during the trip to NYC in 2002 and I was "whatever" about Rent. I was actually blown away by the performance. I even bought the DVD of it because of Jesse L Martin being in it. Guess you could say that is my favorite musical.

I'm just not into musicals, heck I don't even listen to music these days. Although if I see an old musical from my childhood is on TV, I will turn it on for background noise.

 

Ohhh ohh - me!!!!! I love musicals! I've been lucky enough to have seen three on Broadway - Phantom of the Opera (with the girl scouts!), Grand Hotel and The Secret Garden. Since we live in the Metro DC area there's plenty of theaters to see stuff in. We've seen The Lion King, Guys and Dolls (with Tommy Tune), How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying (with Matthew Broderick), Phantom, Les Miserables, Anything Goes. When I was in grad school I'd always get the $10 student tickets and forgo having dinner that day so I could afford it. I've also seen a lot of local theater when friends have been in the production, such as Bye Bye Birdie. I honestly can't remember all I've seen.

My overall favorite would have to be Les Miserables. When I first saw it (on a student ticket, way up in the nosebleed section - lol!) I was overwhelmed. I was crying before I knew it and realized everyone else around me was, as well. It was simply amazing. The one with the best dancing was Guys and Dolls. My sentimental favorite was The Secret Garden simply because it was my mom's favorite book.

Now for musicals in the movies - I think I've seen them all so it's too hard to choose a favorite!

Grease - recent???? time warp my friend. That movie is from 1978! LOL

White Christmas (1954) is another good one as was Holiday Inn (from 1942). The song "White Christmas" was introduced in the movie Holiday Inn. A new version of the song was in the movie White Christmas.

 

EXACTLY!! I was in theater throughout High School and have done some since. We did the Rodgers and Hammerstein's, except Oklahoma got snowed under in the blizzard of 78. I didn't like Les Miserable- the music was fine, but the whole composition of the film to me was off. My son thinks I'm crazy for that, it is his favorite! LOL! Fiddler is my favorite!!

Grease, Mama Mia, Shrek. My DD loves all the musicals and knows them by heart so she will belt along to any and all.

 

the Toucanette's secondary does a musical for the school show every year (except last year unfortunately). They are normally fantastic. The last one I went to was the one and only school show with all 3 of my Toucanettes in it. It was so special and we saw it twice. Only the younger two still at that school now, but they both have parts for the Spring show this year. My son has a main supporting role for his last show. Joy is general cast and specialist dance team, but she's also been asked to understudy one of the main supporting roles just in case. They are going to do Back to the 80s.

 

Sometimes I feel as if I'm the only one who doesn't really care for Hamilton. I don't see the hype. Watched it once on Disney+, but haven't had the desire to watch it again. Maybe because I can't understand a thing they're saying, even with the closed captioning on. And don't get me started on the costumes ... I cringe because they're not historically accurate, even though the designer probably didn't care. LOL!

 

You are not alone. I've never had the desire to see it and I've never listened to the music from it.

 

It is one of my lifelong dreams to wake up one day and suddenly be the star of a musical e.g. walk into the grocery store and the cashier breaks out into song and the other shoppers start a choreographed dance number.

So yes, I love musicals.

My oldest & I have started to go see one live musical per year + try to catch any that pop up as movies in the theater. They are not really into music, like on the radio or at a concert, but love music with a story. The Laura Ingalls Wilder books were their favorite series when they were little, and a Laura-themed musical is coming to town this fall that I'm so excited to take them to.

I have tons of faves but a recent new favorite is "Tick Tick Boom" which is a musical on Netflix about Jonathan Larson who wrote the musical "Rent". My BF and I are actually going to see a local run of "Rent" this weekend as an early bday gift to me.

 

I really enjoy musicals, especially the older movie ones - Brigadoon, Carousel, Oklahoma etc. I was brought up as a child to see the local stage productions.

In my younger adult days I was in 4 local stage musicals - A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; Oklahoma; Camelot; and lastly was Carousel. I sang in the chorus but was on stage with that role for a lot of the scenes. One of my favorite parts of being involved in the production of Carousel ( back in 1982) was that I helped paint the scenery backdrops.
