This gives me hope. I also now want to look up the statistics in my area. I know that most of our teachers and administration have signed up and scheduled vaccines. The town next to us had to change 2-in person school days to virtual days, because so many teacher signed up to get the vaccines. They wanted them to be comfortable, and able to work the school work into a schedule for them if they were not feeling well after the shot.

Sheri, you have been a wealth of information for me when we discuss Covid. You're concise way to put together and link information has been helpful to me. Thank you.

@Tree City I do agree wholeheartedly. We know a couple families in our area that lost younger people in their family - who were diligent in taking precautions - with no pre-existing conditions and they were healthy.

thank you for this. In the early outbreak (March 2020) I had a co-worker that contracted the virus. He was healthy and probably late 40's. He was in the hospital for about 5 weeks on ventilator and ECMO. He survived, but is still dealing with rehab. I'm sure following his experience has made me much more cautious than some, but it was a terrifying experience.

My neighbor, a very healthy, physically fit 55 year old woman had COVID in early November. She was never hospitalized but is considered a long-hauler. She has seen multiple specialists in our area and they just don't know what to do anymore so she has been referred to either OSU Wexner Medical Center or Cleveland Clinic. She and her husband chose Cleveland Clinic even though Columbus is closer to us.

She was accepted into a clinic set up just for long haulers. Her DH said they are limiting it to 500 patients at this time and already have about 400. Because of being a long-hauler, she has also lost her job. She hasn't been able to work since she had COVID (and her job is where she got it, she predicted in August she would get it when she went back to working with her special needs students). Here is an article about the clinic: https://www.cleveland.com/coronavir...rus-long-haulers-with-lingering-symptoms.html

I've probably said this before, but I'm much more concerned with the prospect of developing long hauler syndrome than of the acute COVID infection. I had a similar experience following a flu a few years ago, so I already know I'm prone to post viral residual symptoms ... plus I'm the exact demographic that seems to be hit the hardest, so I likely haven't grown out of it ;) That's also why I had a strong preference for a two dose regimen, since I think it's important to prime your immune system as much as possible. I've read those articles (and others) and hope people get relief from their symptoms during the vaccination process.

Regarding the J&J news about blood clots. I can see how this may be alarming to some, but it's an extremely low incidence relative to the impacts of having COVID (i.e. it's still riskier to get COVID than the vaccine). While I don't have any medical training, my theory is that it's likely those same people could have experienced a similar outcome when they were eventually organically exposed to COVID (it's a probable conclusion everyone will eventually be exposed to COVID, whether it's in nature or via a vaccine). Blood clotting is a known symptom of COVID, so it's not really that surprising a vaccine could mimic a similar immune response.

    Thank you so much!!:heartlub:heartlub

This is definitely me. I know people who are still dealing with symptoms (brain fog and chronic headaches)... no thank you! Those long haul issues that affect the brain concern me the most!

I had J&J so I've been looking into it a bit and I agree with it being riskier to get COVID than the vaccine. I follow two different epidemiologists on fb that are fabulous about collecting data and breaking everything down so that it makes sense. They're Your Local Epidemiologist and Friendly Neighbor Epidemiologist if anyone wants to check them out.

Here's what YLE had to say about J&J today. I also like her post from yesterday debunking the viral blog post about the 18 reasons why you shouldn't get the vaccine.

That sounds like a horrible ordeal! And I agree: what a terrifying experience it must have been, or rather, still is since he is still going through rehab.

Oh wow! Yeah, I'd be worried too. Actually, I am worried because I had a similar issue after the flu as you. It wasn't horrible, but it made me realize that I either have to STOP EVERYTHING when I'm sick or risk getting a worse infection. And mom to mom: when can we stop everything, amiright?

(ETA: I meant to respond to this as well because i didn't want to have so many back-to-back posts. Sorry!)
I think I read about that clinic in a New York Times article. I'm glad she was admitted but I'm sorry she's so sick!

Her DH is very happy that she is a part of this clinic even if it means lots of trips to Cleveland (a 3 hour drive one way). They have done quite a bit of consulting by phone or zoom already. I see her come and go a couple times a week so she is still able to do things but she does have issues. Her lungs are her issue. As her husband told me, she can breathe in just fine but her lungs just aren't expelling the CO2 the way a healthy lung does. She has been told to not wear a mask at all because it is a hindrance for her!

Like so many others, this is me too.

I already have chronic pain/chronic fatigue issues so I have a huge amount of sympathy for the longhaulers :-(

Rollout is very slow here in New Zealand because we have no Covid in the community thanks to our 'hard and early' lockdown that squashed our outbreak, followed by strict border controls.

Like Australia and other Covid-free/Covid-under-control countries we are anxiously watching the uptake of vaccinations in other countries, including the US, because anywhere with a large pool of unvaccinated people will potentially brew up variants for ever more. Some of these will be even more serious and probably some will not be vaccine-responsive, meaning we will be at risk and may have to shut our borders again until the vaccine is tweaked.[IMG]:groan

I'm in Fairfax County and missed this from the superintendent, but VA as a whole has 21.7% of the population fully vaccinated, 37.0% have had at least one dose as of 04/13/2021.

    https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccine-summary/

My son had the J&J vaccine on Sunday afternoon, according to my DIL yesterday (Monday) he had a sore arm, was very tired, then ran a 100.4 fever.

Edited to add that he lives in the San Francisco Bay area in California.

DH and I got our first doses of Moderna today. My appointment was at 11:10 and I walked out at 11:31 so it was super fast which was great. My second dose is scheduled for May 12.

As soon as Michigan opened up to 16 and older, my son asked to get a vaccine. We (my husband, my son, and I) are scheduled to get our first shot (Pfizer) coming up on Monday.

I read all the comments here about having a sore arm and expected a little bit of soreness. Apparently I'm a wimp because I had a total dead arm! Thankfully it wasn't for long; it started feeling better last night and was completely gone 48 hours after injection. DH had no side effects whatsoever the lucky duck.

Today is what I am calling MENTAL FREEDOM DAY for me. 2 weeks ago I got shot #2 so I am now considered fully vaccinated. I am still being cautious in what I do but with warmer weather coming (well, not tonight with 2 to 5 inches of snow predicted), I look forward to being able to spend time with people outside my bubble that have also been vaccinated.

Same. My two weeks are finally over... but son was exposed last Monday, so he is quarantining. School at home, and no more track. We had him tested to be sure, and he is negative. I wear my mask at work - I just don't want to be the cause of someone else getting it. That guilt would weigh heavily on me. They might not care as much since many are vaccinated... but there are some that are not yet.

I am so disappointed in my province/country as we seem to be very far behind in getting shots done. I was only eligible because of the cancer, had my first dose 2 weeks ago and get my second next week. My parents had their first last month and are waiting for second ( in their 80s). My brother got his because he is a police officer. I think they are taking 40s now if you want the Astro one. My parents, brother and I all had Pfizer but I am the only one scheduled for the second.

It was stressing me out awhile back for my parents. My Dad has some underlying health issues so I was really on a rampage to get him one. It was all I tried to do in Feb and March. I got help and was able to book our family. We went to one of the Mega sites here and I was completely shocked at how well it was run and how quickly. While we sat for our 15 minutes after the shot, then booked our second appointment. They don't make your second appointment during the first? (We got Pfizer too!)
