How to use a paper with Threshold Technique

The no float style that you made for PSE users, will work for this technique. I just had to duplicate the photo layer with the no float style a few times to get it to show as dark as I wanted.

@*gina* - Thank you for the wonderful technique tutorial. I love BIG photos and this is a wonderful way to showcase them.

I only have PSE 14 so I had to make a few tweaks to your tutorial, but I was able to get the same effect. I'll add my tweaks here for other PSE users to try.

Open a solid paper.

Use a photo that fills the whole page. It must be black and white.
If you use a colored one use the shortcut Ctrl Shift U (Windows) or Cmd Shift U (Mac) to make it b&w.

Choose the photo layer in your layer palette

Then go to the half filled circle in the layers palette or menu Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Threshold. Click ok. You will get a threshold window. You can change the Threshold Level if you want. I left it at the default.

Select the threshold layer above your photo - right click -> merge down

This step is important because you need to remove the white portions of your photo.
Use your magic wand tool and uncheck contiguous. Then select all the white and hit delete.

Now go to File -> Place (a window will open) and you can choose a paper - I decided to use a patterned one.

Click the alt key on your keyboard and click on the line between the patterned paper and the photo in your layer palette. That will clip the paper to the black of your photo.

Right click the pattern paper layer in the layers palette and select merge down.

If you want a more blended look, select the pattern filled photo layer and adjust the fill opacity by holding the shift key and a number key.
Fill opacity is only available in PSE by using the shortcuts of shift and a number.
100% fill opacity is shift 0
90% fill opacity is shift 9
80% fill opacity is shift 8 and so forth.

* or you could use Christa's no float style (which I can't find the link to so I hope Christa comes along and adds it) and just duplicate the no float style applied photo layer until it is to your liking.

Now you can add your elements, your word art etc.
