In Greek mythology, almost every plant and tree is associated with a young person that fell madly in love, died, and then the Olympians created a tree on his honor. The myth about the almond tree is no exception. Phyllis was the daughter of a Thracian king, and she married Demophon, King of Athens and son of Theseus, while hestopped in Thrace on his journey home from the Trojan War. Demophon, duty bound to Athens, returns home to help his father, leaving Phyllis behind. When Phyllis realizes that he will not return, she commits suicide by hanging herself from a tree. Where she is buried, an almond tree grows, which blossoms when Demophon returns to her.
