Journaling reads:
I have been dreading this day for two weeks.
The day before Christmas break.
The day most every kid wakes up with a sugar high.
The day of behavior problems.
Behavior problems that are my job to deal with.
I had no idea what to expect this year.
And man oh MAN did I ever have fun. My friend Carolyn (the new music teacher) was in charge of the all-school sing-along and I offered to help. I ended up being the master of ceremonies, which was really good. I think it gave the opportunity for a lot of parents to finally put a face with the name and position. I talked. I danced. I listened. I danced some more. (In front of 500 people.) The kids danced with me. The crowning moment was when Carolyn said in the mic "I think Miss Farrer has one more thing for you guys...."
To which I said "I need you guys to stand up!"
The kids totally knew what was coming. It was fabulous. There were 450 squeals of delight as I pushed play and my Christmas Macarena song came booming out. The whole school was dancing, having fun, and enjoying a moment of solidity and community.
I love my job.
