My page is about the Myers-Briggs Personality Test my employer had me take as part of a team-building retreat when I was 19 years old and my youngest daughter’s request to have me take a similar test about a year ago (when I was *cough* much older). It made me think about the core of who we fundamentally are and whether or not that really changes with life experiences. Here’s my journaling (734 words):

About a year ago, Callan took an online personality test and wanted me to do the same. It was a knock-off version of the Myers-Briggs Personality Test. Instead of taking the test, I went digging (yep, I never throw anything away).

When I was 19, I first heard the term “thinking outside of the box.” It was during a team-building retreat sponsored by my employer, Progressive Insurance. I thought it was a brilliant, eye-opening concept. To encourage “thinking outside of the box,” Progressive decided everyone at the retreat should take the Myers-Briggs test. It’s an in-depth questionnaire designed to indicate psychological markers that reveal how people make decisions, their scruples, motivators, and how they perceive the world around them.

Based upon the answers given, an indicator is assigned for key personality traits, with percentages given for those and their opposing, non-dominant traits. At 19, I felt their final assessment was spot-on. I told Callan that if I was to take the test now, I doubt my results would be much different. I’m an ESTJ - Life’s Administrators!

E = EXTROVERTS / According to Myers-Briggs, extroverts:
• Are outgoing, dominant, and straightforward
• Excellent multi-taskers and enjoy working at a fast pace
• Like to be around people but can get distracted easily

While it said I was an extrovert, I was barely an extrovert and had a very high percentage of introvert traits. This wasn’t surprising. Even as a small child, I’ve always preferred to be alone, but I easily engage and enjoy others when I make the effort. My husband has encouraged me to interact with people, so this is always a work in progress because it is not my natural tendency.

The Pad has also helped with this because I find I really do want to interact with my Peeps. I’m finding value in everyone’s unique story. This wouldn’t be the case for me 5-6 years ago.

S = SENSORS / Sensors are:
• Realists who prefer to deal with facts instead of feelings
• Determine practical solutions to problems
• Notice details and trust experience/established skills

A SENSOR’s opposite is an INTUITIVE, which I also had a high percentage in. I do look at the bigger picture of a situation, enjoy figuring things out for myself and admire creative ideas – all INTUITIVE traits and proof that you can’t pigeonhole anyone.

T = THINKERS / Thinkers’ traits are:
• Honest, direct, reserved and rationale; value fairness
• Good at seeing flaws in situations
• Make most decisions objectively
• Rarely take things personally & enjoy debating issues for fun
• Motivated by achievements

I was strongest in this trait and feel it is probably the one that sums up my personality the best. Its “opposites” are FEELERS, who make their decisions based upon feelings and often take things personally. My oldest daughter is definitely a FEELER, which always makes for an interesting dynamic.

J = JUDGERS / According to Myers-Briggs:
• Are organized and prepared
• Take responsibilities seriously
• Prefer to make & stick with detailed plans
• Feel rules & deadlines should be respected
• Typically reach conclusions quickly & then want to move on

These traits can be a hindrance to me. Sometimes I spend more time organizing/planning instead of actually “doing,” which is something I’m working on. This Type-A girl knows there is a happy medium. I just need to find it.

MY ASSESSMENT
People are wonderfully-complicated melting pots of ideas, thoughts, values, feelings and so much more. No one is just these four things, but assessments, such as Myers-Briggs, are interesting to ponder. Do we really change who and what we are, even with immense effort? Am I the same person at (almost) 47 as I was when I was 19? Obviously not. I’ve had a lifetime of experiences since then. I’ve raised two grown daughters, am still raising a teenage son, and have the joy of witnessing burgeoning new life in my grandson.

I look at the mirrored reflections of myself and my dear husband, and I can see how much we’ve changed in the 32 years we’ve been together. However, I think the core of who I am has never fundamentally changed and probably never will.

Love me or hate me… I’m just a girl struggling to do her best every day for myself and those I touch. My mind and heart are always looking heavenward because that is my ultimate goal. Everything else is just thinking inside of this earthly box.

      @KarenB Thanks so much, Karen! I took that test almost 30 years ago, and not much has changed in my personality. Not sure if that’s good or bad... LOL.
