How To Love Yourself, When You’re Not Who You Remember Being

How To Love Yourself, When You’re Not Who You Remember Being

Journaling reads:

I

Hold on to the scraps you do recognize.
Sew them together and make a suit of armor.
Wear it to bed.
Wear it in the shower.
Do not allow anyone to talk you out of it.
When it gets pierced, patch it with bright thread.

II

You will cry over the parts too tattered to save.
Use them to dry your eyes.
Then do not hesitate to burn them.
Make them an offering to Heathen Gods.

III

You are not a vampire.
Your reflection is unavoidable.
When seeing yourself feels like
being mugged in a garbage-strewn alley,
the only recourse is to face that mugger and
punch them in the ******* head until
they give up and leave you alone.

IV

Find something beautiful about yourself,
no matter how small or insignificant you think it is.
Hold on to it while you punch anyone who tries to
say you can’t wear that outfit, that hair color, that armor.
It will help you hit harder.

V

Have I made that part clear?
Fight for yourself.
Even if all you can do is lay on the floor and scream
No, I Will Not,
You Cannot.
Even if all you can do is curl under the blanket,
breathing and whispering
i refuse to give up.
Even if the one you’re fighting is yourself.

VI

Do not venerate the former you.
Do not scorn them.
Appreciate what you learned from them.
And do not hesitate to burn their bridge
— or them —
if necessary for survival.

VII

Buy yourself presents.
Feed your wide, needy mouth something it enjoys.
Decorate your dry, bruised hands.
Run away from home for a little while.
Build bonfires.
Dance around them.

Oh this is brilliant! I LOVE your poem and all the little bits that you've added to accent your story! I also really love that you put this in a little traveler's notebook size journal to add to the homemade feel. And now I NEED that journal. Off to shop! Thanks for the inspiration!

@Karen Your comment made me realize I somehow managed to forget to credit the notebook - if you're still looking for it, it's from the Abundant kit from EDB.

And thank you - for the kind words and the kick :-D

This is amazing! I am so glad that you had the opportunity to scrap this poem, and I agree with the others - you have portrayed it brilliantly here! I love all the little details, and I am still finding them!

Of course my mind is spinning because there are SO MANY naughty words that can be put in that space. LOL!!!!

@Dalis Anyone who knows me irl would bet large cash on it being one of the f words, but it isn't :-D (It's more blasphemous than vulgar, if curiosity is killing your cat)
