Every Christmas, we woke up to find that Santa had moved all the furniture and covered the tree with sheets. Apparently, this was because we couldn’t be trusted not to try and peek at our gifts before church. No presents until after Mass because we needed to remember why we celebrated Christmas. For Christmas Day, we went to 7:30 a.m. mass. The streets to St. Joe’s would be lined with burning down luminaries that had been out all night. Some years, we'd have snow. The church would be a little more crowded than a normal Sunday mass at that time but not crazy like the later services, we’d be able to get home and – wait more in the driveway. Dad would always leave us, four anxious and excited children, in the car with Mom while he moved the furniture back and turned on the tree before we could go in and see everything. Mom said listening to us fight and moan about it not being fair was the worst part of the day for her (And that included usually working the 3-11 shift as a nurse.) As we got older, we were allowed to open our stockings before bed on Christmas Eve and one year when we were almost all adults we opened our presents at midnight, but it felt weird and we never did that again. We slept in that year and went to 9 a.m. Mass too and that was another mistake. Talk about taking your life in your hands.(Word Count 253)
