Journaling:
For the last two years, both in 2018 and 2019 I have documented my December. It was fun taking photos every day of things related to Christmas and documenting my day. The lights, the colors, the activities. But in 2020, so much of this just was not happening. Restaurants were carry-out only, Christmas festivities had been cancelled or extremely pared down. And we were not thrilled to be around crowds anyway. Thank you Covid-19... The world has been reeling from the effects, the deaths, the sadness. People have been staying at home to try to bring the numbers down. And so this gave birth to my idea for this past December: take a photo out the driveway from our home every day, home where I would be spending the Christmas holidays.

I had hoped for some variation of my days, sun, clouds, rain, snow. Well, one third of the way into my December and my photos showed leaves and twigs on the driveway. No variation in the weather, not even a rainy day. We had had an extremely dry month. Just my luck. I was now hoping for rain (or snow). I originally decided to pair Christmas or winter song lyrics to match the weather for each layout. A clever thought, but I soon realized that there are not many songs out there for boring, dry December days. I even went so far as to locate a Christmas song fake book to see if I could find some obscure songs that referenced our weather. Not a lot of ideas. On December 6th, in my daily photo, I managed to capture a squirrel crossing the driveway. Did anyone know that there is a song out there called “Earl the Christmas Squirrel”? I did not, but thanks to Google, I do now.

But I persevered. For the first ten days, because of the boring similarity of each passing day, I deviated from my original plan by slightly varying the image in my snapshot. Seaming four of them together would be a panoramic, and I typically took four photos each day and selected one of the four for my page. It gave me a bit of variety. I tried taking a few at daybreak, a few in the evening. And it rained on December 11th! I was ecstatic, running out there in the afternoon when the rain started! On December 12th, it snowed, a dusting, but snow nonetheless. I was in heaven! By December 20th, the snow was gone, replaced with just sunny or gray days. A bit of rain, and then sunshine on December 23rd. Miraculously, on the evening of December 27th, it snowed! I could finally use “Dashing through the Snow”. On December 30th, we woke to a winter wonderland, a good seven or eight inches of snow on the ground.

My journaling on each page is simple. I have included the date, the day of the week, the time the photo was taken, recording the hour, the minute and the second, the temperature highs and lows. For December 21st, the Winter solstice, I realized that the days would be getting longer, so I made a decision to also include sunrise and sunset times, showing the slight daily change. Back to day one to add these times in. My December pages are complete through December 25th. I have finished both front and back covers (showing the front and back of our home and property respectively). I have seven more pages to decorate. Song lyrics are selected for most of the remainder. I am also including the Persnickity Prints Covid-19 December timeline, a December calendar, an introduction explaining the intent for my December days, and at least one additional page of journaling. I also have some cute memes that I may incorporate. It will all depend on my mood at the time I assemble my book. Speaking of my book, each page is 4x8, travelers notebook format, centered on an 8.5 x 11” page. Big white margins which I like, the same format I had used for the prior two years. I’m excited to finish this. While it isn’t a typical “Document Your December”, this has not been a typical year.

I now have this strong compulsion to take a daily photo of my driveway. It is January 11th, and I have not missed a day since the first of December. Just think, I could have a year’s worth of driveway photos! Maybe a future book project? LOL!

This is a great compilating of your deviation for DYD this year. I thought your pages turned out great (the ones I saw) and I loved that you included all of the details of each day. (I almost "stole" this idea from you. LOL) The fact that you're going on into January is another great idea. I stopped again on the 31st. I can't wait to see your book in it's entirety. Great journaling!

I remember experiencing that compulsion at the beginning of 2017 after I completed my 2016 Project 365. Habits are strong!
      Great storytelling!

edited to add: I just remembered I feel it every February after completing MOC too. :D
