Hello everyone! Judie (HeyJude) here with a quick tip for creating those awesome spillover effects on your pages. I just love the artsy look of photo spilling over a frame and onto the background of a page. There are several ways to achieve this effect, but my favorite quick tip for this technique is to use paint elements to mask in the effect.
I used the technique on this page (created with the oh. so. awesome. November BYOC Collection):
I also added lots of yummy paint under the frame, to give it a very grungy art feel. This is what the effect looks like without all the under painting:
I achieved this effect in just a few quick, simple steps (that can be completed in any digital scrapping program).
Spillover Steps:
(1) Start by placing the frame on the page. Then add a clipping mask underneath it cut to fit the inside frame opening.
(2) Now place the photo under the frame and on the layer above the clipping mask and adjust its size so that the main focal point is inside the frame, with some parts spilling over the edges. This is what my photo looked like before and after it was clipped to the frame mask:
(3) Make a copy of the photo and move it above the frame in the layers palette. Be sure to lock the two photo layers together (by clicking the chain link button at the bottom of the layers palette in Photoshop). By locking the two layers together, you ensure that the photos will stay together if you want to change their position.
(4) Add a paint element over a part of the photo that you want to spill over the frame. Once you have decided where you want the paint elements to be positioned, move them to the layer just beneath the photo and clip the photo to it (using the “create clipping mask” command in Photoshop, or similar command if you are using a different program). REPEAT this step with each paint element/clipping mask that you use until you have achieved the look that you want. (I used paint elements from Light Me Home by Lynn Grieveson.)
Here is a screenshot of my layers palette, including all of the different paint masks and placement of the frame.
As you can see, I used three different paint elements to mask in the spillover effect. And it really is just as simple as that!
I hope this technique sparks some creative ideas for you. Be sure to share your creations with us – we would love to see what you do with it!!
Until next time ~
Judie
