Hi all! Polly Jewelle here with another edition of Behind the Design. With a little bit of pleading and maybe a few bribes we got the designers here at The LilyPad to agree to show off their design spaces at home. They also agreed to answer a few questions about their design space that will allow us to get to know them better. This month we are going behind the designs of
Mac or PC?
I work on PC. I have dual 22 inch screens and absolutely love my set up. I can design on one screen and play, watch Netflix or be social networking on the other.
Coffee or tea (or both/neither)?
I don’t drink either. My drink of choice is diet Coke. Preferably with fresh lemon wedges. In the summer I splurge and make myself a dirty diet Coke while I sit to work. YUM!
Guilty pleasure snack while creating/scrapping?
I very rarely snack while I work. Since all my designs are hand painted, cut and pieced I can’t have dirty fingers or they get on my paper pieces and scan into the design. However, on the days when I’m uploading products or promoting designs I will occasionally have a snack. My newest addiction is Pirate’s Booty. I eat those fluffy puffs until the inside of my mouth is raw. (Could I have a messier snack to eat?! I don’t think so!)
Favorite music to listen to?
I have 4 children ranging in ages from 3rd grade to a graduating senior this year. My days are ridiculously insane (and noisy). I work in complete silence the few hours that I do get to work during the week. I love the quiet. However, sometimes when I’m cutting out my paper pieces I will catch up on my shows on Netflix. But those times are few and far between.
Your view from your scrap space?
I scrap on my desk top which sits on our loft that overlooks the majority of the house downstairs. Though my number one rule is to never be on the computer when I have kids at home, if by some chance I am finishing up a deadline or something similar, I can still actively be a part of what is going on with the kids. I can see who is coming and going, I can yell over the banister to make sure homework is being finished and chores are getting done. I love my home. I may not have a room set a side for designing or crafting but I love that I can be on my computer if needed and still be in the center of all that is going on. We have giant windows and skylights that allow tons of natural light to flood in. It is ideal for creating.
What software do you use to create with?
I use PSCC(Photo Shop Creative Cloud).
Favorite photo editing tools?
I take a lot of pictures and I have Lightroom, but I haven’t had time to play and learn how to use it. I have always just used Photoshop for all my photo editing. I don’t really have any favorite tools because I have never really ventured into that area much. I wish I had more time in my day to play with all the fun tools that Lightroom and Photoshop have to offer.
Favorite time to create (morning or evening)?
I only have a couple hours to work on a couple days each week and I never work on weekends. I am sooooo NOT a morning person. But I have also realized that I am too old for my late late nights of designing and scrapping. I make too many mistakes when I do that anymore. I love being lazy in the mornings (when I don’t have anywhere to be). I start by getting a few simple chores out of the way and then pull out my paints, scissors and glue about 10am and can usually crank out 2-3 sets at a time. However, every spring my family is involved in sports and other after school programs as well as end of the year activities which really limits the number of products I get released during that time. It’s quite frustrating. Thankfully it’s only temporary.
Favorite thing about your workspace?
The lighting in my home is exquisite. I don’t really create in one spot either. I paint on my kitchen island. Cut out my paper pieces on my bedroom floor and scan and extract on my desktop in the center of my home on the loft.
Least favorite thing about your workspace?
If for some reason I do have to work while kids are home or into the night, my work station is in the center of my home. It can be noisy or keep kids awake as I am located right by most of the kids bedrooms. That rarely happens though so it’s not a big deal.
What would you dream workspace look like and where would it be?
I don’t really have a dream workspace in mind. I love collecting and organizing crafts. A room full of light and cupboards and counter space would be fun. But it’s never something I’ve wished for or dreamed of. I don’t think I’d like to be secluded off and away from my family. As of now, our crafts are in an armoire in the dining room. Center access for everyone to use and enjoy. I love watching my kids craft and I love crafting with them. I’m worried that if I had workspace in a devoted space or room that I’d never come out or that my kids would never come out. Sometimes there are crafts dragged through out my house and it drives me completely batty, but I seriously wouldn’t change that for the world.
Oh I loved peeking into Jacque’s design space. I always wondered where and how she got all those felts cut out for her kits. I’m so jealous of the light in her house. You can tell from her pictures just how gorgeous it is! How about you? What did you enjoy learning about Jacque and her design space? Be sure and let us know in the comments!
