Hello! Going in to MOC soon, I am trying to remember what it feels like to get a page done in a timely manner. I joined in with Monica and Scrapping with Liz's Make It Scrappy (MIS) this past weekend and this was my thought process and approach. For starters, who has time to search through their entire camera roll or back-up folder of photos that dates back to the dawn of digital photography when scrapping for MOC unless the photo is specified? (Wait! You aren't sure what Month of Challenges is? Check out the forum here for some info and join us in January!)So anyway, no, I scroll back through anything marked as 'favourite' in my phone for a few minutes max. The first photo (or set) that I have a title idea for, instantly wins and that's what I'm scrapping if it fits all the other challenge requirements. Today it's bird photos (if you know me, I'm sure you're shocked, or rather, … [Read more...]
Page Fixes: Let’s talk about Color Temperature (& Photo Filters)
I don’t think it matters how long you’ve scrapped or who you are, there are times when you just aren’t loving the page as it’s coming together in front of you. It happens to everyone, right?! As a mix and match scrapper, sometimes clashing colours feel like the problem. But is it always the colours or is it actually the colour temperature? Instead of turning everything black and white, let's look at some other filters.______________________________Colour Theory Background:As far as what we begin learning about as children goes, most people have a superficial understanding that red, orange and yellow and derivatives of these tend to be warm, whereas blue, green and purple as a general rule, tend to be cool colours. It's probably not a coincidence that hot water taps are often labelled in red and the cold tap in blue!A step beyond this level of understanding though, I think most … [Read more...]
SOSN Stash Mash – Sept 6, 2023
Hi there, if you are a regular visitor to the TLP Blog, you might remember the Monday Mash-up Series from last year, where we looked at strategies to step outside the ‘one kit only’ scrapping box to increase your confidence in mixing and matching and ability to stretch your stash. (And if you didn’t see any of them, you are forgiven LOL and the good news is you can still access them). Anyway, with all those lessons up our sleeves, this year I’m introducing the SOSN Stash Mash!Every Wednesday when TLP Designers put a selection of goodies on sale at half price (here’s a link to this week’s specials category), I’m reminded of some specific treasures I have in my stash and feel inspired to pull them out from the depths of my harddrive again. And I know now that I can find a few kits among that day’s selection that will work perfectly together to tell my stories and support and enhance my … [Read more...]
Mixed Media Beginners: Dolls and Art Dolls
Hi there! Even if you lived under a rock, I would bet you'd know Barbie has been trending. Well not really bet, I'm not much of a gambler but I'm also probably one of few people with no interest in seeing the movie. It did influence the selection of the photo I'm scrapping today though and a Mixed Media product to feature this month - namely Art Dolls.___________________________What is an art doll? Good question, kind of hard for me to answer. Looks like they're also known as collage dolls. These are unique and whimsical paper-pieced art portraits that are often flat but can incorporate dimensional and found objects or traditional scrapbooking elements. They can vary from lifelike illustrated people with a wardrobe of pre-made costumes, much like press-out paper dolls you may remember from childhood, to equally strange and wonderful creations, limited only by imaginations. In the … [Read more...]
Zooming In: Layout Analysis with Close-Ups
"The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts”. You might know this quote, attributed to philosopher Aristotle. It's another way of saying all the little pieces of a system or larger entity are even more important when put together, because they play off each other and have a synergistic effect. The quote is a bit controversial in theory and attribution, but it justifies a closer look at any 'whole' to appreciate everything that it contains and benefits from. In scrapbooking we can see this in action in everything from kit previews, that show the synergy of so many pieces and elements against patterns and papers, to completed layouts, where the synergy can come not only from the combination of elements, photos, fonts and papers as pieces, but also in the way each piece is used and positioned to create the whole.Today I'm getting out the virtual magnifying glass to zoom-in on parts … [Read more...]
