Hey everyone! I’m excited to be back again this month helping out with the style challenge. My challenge is more about the design or “compositional” style of your page, rather than any particular type of scrapping style ... and the composition we are going to be playing with on our projects is diagonals. Read this excerpt from an art Professor at Cornell University: "Diagonal lines suggest a feeling of movement or direction. Since objects in a diagonal position are unstable in relation to gravity, being neither vertical nor horizontal, they are either about to fall, or are already in motion … diagonal lines are also used to indicate depth … an illusion of a space that one could move about within. Thus if a feeling of movement or speed is desired, or a feeling of activity, diagonal lines can be used." –Charolette Jirousek; Cornell University char.txa.cornell.edu Although she’s talking about diagonal lines in paintings and illustrations – this aspect of design can be applied to photography and even our scrapbook pages. So for this month's style challenge I want you to use a diagonal composition – where the main focus of the page moves from one corner to the opposite corner. For your project, consider choosing photos of an activity or a theme that would benefit from the feeling of movement, speed, or direction. Here is how I interpreted this diagonal composition challenge: I can't wait to see your take on the style challenge utilizing diagonals! As always: your page must contain at least 75% Lilypad product. Your page should be posted to the Lilypad Gallery and then linked to the Challenge Layouts thread so it can be tracked, and to this thread. The Lilypad uses a percent system for our challenges' the number of challenges you participate in determines the store discount you will receive at the end of the month: 2 challenges = 10% off 4 challenges = 20% off 6 challenges = 30% off If you complete 7 challenges, you will receive a coupon for 30% off, plus you will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate from the Lilypad (new prize starting with the July challenges)! The first seven challenges will be posted on the first of the month' the eighth challenge is the BYOC challenge, which is posted on BYOC release day. Each page counts for one challenge (you cannot use one layout for multiple challenges).
I went with the shape of the top tile, and cropped the rest of the photos to shape, even though the theme here isn't the movement, but I hope the diagonal flow takes you through the details of this amazing house.
i like diagonals (especially those papers that are already done for you in two colours, half on one triangle and half on the other but i tend to have a hard time using them - maybe it's a rule of thirds thing? i dunno but i turned a vertical stripe paper a bit to make it diagonal (it's not 45 degrees) and then duplicated it cos it was a bit to short to reach the top and bottom edges and wiggled it over to line up behind the wooden frame
