I want to try something a bit different this month. Each week I want to push the journaling portion...not in what you write, but HOW you write. Using different techniques on each week's page. I am a lover of fonts, alphas and freeform...which is what we are gonna start with this week.
    HAND LETTERING-freeform with a brush.

Freeform, yep you can use your mouse, stylus or pad to free form words.
Now you can go with as much as you feel comfortable...say take a quote
and break it up. Use some alphas/fonts and put in YOUR own FREE formed words!
First thing choose your quote and type out in text box on canvas size of your choosing.
    MM-w1-A.jpg
    now YOU
    1. rasterize text
right click on text layer Palette
click rasterize. It is no longer text, but an element you can cut.

    2. cut out the portion you want to replace with FREEform type.
use marquee tool, polygon tool, your favorite cut tool.
get marching ants, then right click to cut to make new layer.

    3. create NEW layer for handwritten/free form word/ word phrase
    MM-w1-B.jpg
    1. On new layer, choose a brush and color you want. I went with black just to stay the same for now.
I used round point stiff (stock brush) at 43 point for this. But go with what makes you happy!
    2. hand draw the missing words to quote
    MM-w1-C.jpg
Now you can play with your handwriting. This is the fun of art journaling to me...taking time, enjoying it...create and journal in an artsy way.
    MM-w1-D.jpg
If you look at the bottom of your layer panel there is a fx button. Play, push buttons, change color and experiment. I also warped the bottom one and just had fun.

I am using CS5, and don't know how other programs work, so if you can't do it...try a different angle, talk to me, lets create together. The learning process should be fun, relaxing and part.
    WE can DO this!

    Week #1 Challenge
Use a free form (mouse, stylus or pad) to hand draw words (at least 5 hand drawn words)
Then create rest of page to show it off in your own AJ style. This can be any way! Woot!

    example page here:
this is just the 5 minimum words used inside a quote
    [IMG]

go at your own pace and enjoy! I will be back next week for another HOW on journaling!

Sounds good but don't think my computer has the ability to hand draw. This is something I have never tried. I use PSE 11. Any suggestions??????

PSE definitely has a brush/pen tool. I don't use that software, so I'll let someone who knows more about it help you.

Angela, I will check it out----BUT-----WOOT WOOT!!!!-----guess what I just found on my computer!! A WRITING PEN!!! I've had this computer for 4 years and NEVER knew what that squiggly little icon up in the right hand corner was for. I am a scaredy cat when it comes to clicking on things I don't know about. Afraid I may blow up my computer!!! Well, I had just put something into My Favorites and this icon is right next door, so I finally decided to click on it, and WALAAAA!! It's a writing pen!!! Now off to play with it!!!

Dear Anne - I do not like my own hand writing, even less the wibble wobble of the mouse.
As a challenge this one is a doozy!

*Hint... Make your workspace like 150 or more percent when you are writing... you will have more control.. I know it is like that when I was using my wacom. I don't have that attached so I will be using my mouse, but there is more control when the workspace is magnified.

oh yeah on knitting, I am a crocheter...and every time I try to knit, I get a bit stressed.

it is a doozy, but it will make the rest seem easy, right?

I need to see if I have a squiggly icon! bhahha

I am starting strong, as I wanted to grab you all right from the bat off the MOC, so you would all rejoice I didn't do this for a challenge there. tee hee
but it is fun, and it really can be a grand time, just replacing words with your own handwriting.
