Can you set up a tripod? Long exposures and small apertures, which requires setting the camera on a tripod or wall or something sturdy, have given me my favorite night photos. But most of all, don't forget your camera like I did when we went out to look at lights this evening!
If you are using auto-exposure, you might want to take some practice shots. I found I needed to darken the exposure compared to what auto did. For fun after you get the nice pics, try blurring it on purpose (camera shake/flip) or out-of-focus. You can get some cool abstract pics that way.
