Do you take long books with you or none at all? Does it depend on the type of getaway?

I can't decide what to do. We'll be gone for the 2nd half of Jan. Interstate road trip basically, with pretty packed days but nights mostly free and I don't think the laptop's joining me so no scrapping. I've been reading thru a bunch of paperbacks I bought a few months back -I forgot how much they can weigh! so I guess I'm taking the e-reader just in case but can't imagine getting thru much and kinda don't want to start something that I won't want to put down... maybe I should just add some audiobooks to my iPod...

Audiobooks for a road trip! I always pack paperbacks (why are they all so big now? I seek out the smaller ones deliberately now) but rarely get around to reading more than one. Are you heading north or south? Totally unrelated to reading, just curious...:giggle

i load up my nook. I rarely read in paper anymore. I like the portability of my nook.

I take whatever book I'm currently reading, the device I'm reading it on, and its charger. :) I normally read long books, so that is plenty to get me through. If I think it might not be, I'll take two devices or load up and extra book on my reader.

(To be honest, I do normally take two devices, the tablet that I prefer to read on and the eink reader that is more portable, but I wanted to sound like I'm more practical than that. LOL)

I love the portability of the e-reader. Also, too, if I load a couple of books, I have some choices on what to read in case I start something I don't really like.

On our last trip, I just read using an e-reader app on our iPad. After the kids were asleep I set it to "night reading," and no one in the hotel room was disturbed.

I take books. I haven't yet made the leap to an e-reader. I feel like I spend so much time on screens working. I know it's inevitable but I am putting it off! I am taking books with me around the world this week LOL. Over the year I gather up secondhand paperback ones that I can discard as I go. My husband has always given me grief about this :blahblahblah, but a few months ago he picked up books at the library sale and said he would read them while we were away. They are huge heavy hardbacks. He really hasn't got this :cornfused

I load up my e-reader when I go away. I rarely read a paper book anymore and never when we're traveling. I also have a library app on my ipad but prefer the non-backlit e-reader screen.

Vacations are when we read the most! A road trip might not be conducive to it, though, unless you are able to read in the car (I can for short stretches). We do love audiobooks for long drives!

We just got back from a cruise, and THAT is definitely the kind of trip that we read on! It's deck chairs and iPads for us most of the day while at sea, with the occasional trip out to find food. :) In port, we go snorkeling and then read more as soon as the ship leaves port again. We don't do shows, we don't listen to the music, we don't go to the casino...we just read. We are very boring cruise passengers. :)

we bought DD an e-reader before going overseas in 2013 b/cos there was no way the luggage limit would allow for a month of books for her- hard covers?! oh dear!

driving south and then the ferry to tassie (b/cos it's the one place in Aust neither DH or I have been so it's kind of a bucket list thing - have you been?) and more driving south, and then ultimately north again, in time for school to go back!

i have a kobo glo - i like that its e-ink and not really backlit but still good for night reading, AND that if it's a long book it's not heavy like a real long book!

For road trips, I take my e-reader (Kindle Fire) and, like @sakura-panda, my backup Fire, plus I put a few books on my kids' Kindle Fires (hey, don't judge: we do 13 hours in the car in one day. I feel like a little entertainment every once in awhile is ok!). Plus I bring ONE paperback book and lots of magazines. In the car with (young, one of whom is not-yet-reading age) kids, it's tough for me to "get into" a book, so the magazines are nice. I'm hoping that when the kids are older and require less from me (cuz they're reading on their own!), I'll be able to actually read a book in the car. I love to read in the car! Our first big road trip with the kids, I naively thought I'd be able to finish a whole book each way. I was very wrong.

@bellbird , we did that trip just after christmas 12 years ago with the kids. We were lucky to get a cabin as it really bad weather ( half the sydney to hobart yachts had pulled out due to damage that year) we just slept the whole trip. One young girl was proudly telling us she threw up four times on that trip. Much better coming back...

Loved tassie, looking forward to going back soon. Have fun!

Nope. I'm usually running around too much to read. I'm the type of person who has to see everything that I can, then I literally crash into bed at night and fall fast asleep! I used to bring books, but they never got read so now they stay home.

Lately, vacations are the only time I have to relax and read books. I bring my Kindle...so much easier to bring and takes up less space. Though I miss the actual page turning of books sometimes. :)

I always pack my kindle when going away, either read on the journey or during those quiet moments of a family holiday. We are going to Benidorm next year for 10 days and I can't wait to load my kindle and enjoy time sat by the pool with a cheeky cocktail and a good book :)

This is Us on a cruise too! We do go to the shows sometimes, but we read ALOT! We are going on a trans-Atlantic cruise in April and I will be loading up my kindle.

Bellbird, how are you going to finish the MOC if you don't take your laptop?????

@kimingvtx Transatlantic cruise ships have great libraries! run to it your first day on board and get some books.

I usually try to take paperbacks I've been iffy on to read on vacations. Trouble is most of those turn out to be duds. I much prefer paper but find that there is not a good reading light for bedtime reading in almost all the places we stay from hotels, to home rentals to air bnb. Old eyes need more light! this trip I did take some books on my iPad but also downloaded some movies from that trial with PlayOn. dh always reads those big fat books on his iPad mini @LynnG. I never thought he's make the move but when it's a choice of books or BIG feet shoes, his practicality won out.
